These Editorial Standards describe the principles and practices that guide how Buffalo Bills Community researches, writes, edits, and publishes content. They apply to all staff and contributors across our news, program updates, and community stories.
Sourcing
We prioritize primary and firsthand sources wherever possible — direct interviews, official statements, original documents, and firsthand observation. When secondary sources are used, we identify them clearly and evaluate their reliability before relying on their information. Anonymous sources are used sparingly and only when the information is important to the public interest and cannot reasonably be obtained on the record.
Fact-Checking
Before publication, factual claims — names, dates, figures, quotes, and statistics — are checked against original sources wherever possible. Where a claim cannot be independently verified, we say so clearly in the piece rather than presenting it as confirmed fact.
AI Disclosure
Where artificial intelligence tools are used in the research, drafting, or production of our content, we disclose that use to readers. AI-assisted content is reviewed and approved by a human editor before publication, and AI is not used as a substitute for human editorial judgment, fact-checking, or original reporting.
Separation of Editorial and Advertising
Editorial content and paid or sponsored content are kept clearly separate. Sponsored material is labeled as such wherever it appears, and advertisers have no influence over our editorial coverage, story selection, or the opinions expressed in our content.
Updating Published Content
Stories may be updated after publication as new information becomes available. Substantive updates are noted within the article. For factual errors, see our Corrections Policy, which explains how corrections, updates, clarifications, and retractions are handled and disclosed.
Editorial Review
Content goes through an editorial review process prior to publication. This includes a check for factual accuracy, fairness, clarity, and adherence to these standards. Final publication decisions rest with our editorial team, independent of outside commercial or organizational influence.
Attribution
We properly attribute information, images, quotes, and data to their original sources. We do not present another outlet’s original reporting as our own, and where we build on the work of others, we credit it clearly.
Community Voice
As the philanthropic and community-facing arm of the Buffalo Bills, our content often reflects the voices and stories of the people we serve. We strive to represent these stories accurately, respectfully, and with the consent of those involved.
